The Barbados Tourism Department are struggling to clean up the huge amounts of seaweed being washed onto the sandy beaches.
The sargassum seaweed is a form of algae that grows out in the mid-Atlantic, but has been found in droves along the coastline of Barbados. It is great for the sealife including hatchling turtles and fish, but is making the sea green and is causing havoc on the beaches.
The government said on Tuesday it is welcoming assistance from schools and community groups to clear the seaweed. Crews are also being deployed daily to clear coastlines of pungent piles of sargassum seaweed.
